The Issue
During the harsh winter months in Kingston, Ontario, many residents like us face a significant challenge: the daunting task of removing snow windrows from our driveways. After city snowplows clear the streets, they leave behind a wall of snow blocking our driveways, making it nearly impossible for many of us, especially seniors and those with physical limitations, to access the roads. The struggle and physical demand of shoveling these heavy snow piles can lead to injuries, exacerbate health issues, and strain the community's well-being.

While the city already prioritizes road and sidewalk clearing, the oversight of leaving residents to handle the driveway windrows themselves places an unfair burden upon us. The current situation disproportionately affects the elderly, people with disabilities, and even working families who have limited time and resources to manage continuous snowfall.

To alleviate these issues and improve the quality of life for residents, we propose the creation of a dedicated Kingston Driveway Snow Windrow Removal Program. This program would involve a dedicated city service tasked specifically with clearing driveway windrows after major snowfalls. The service could operate following main road and sidewalk clearings, ensuring timely removal and safe access for homes throughout Kingston.

Implementing such a program offers multiple benefits: it would enhance safety for all residents, decrease the incidence of snow-related injuries, and promote a more inclusive environment where everyone, regardless of physical ability or age, can navigate the harsh winter conditions without undue hardship.

Several cities across Canada, including neighboring municipalities, have successfully implemented similar programs, realizing improvements in residential satisfaction and safety. By taking this proactive step, Kingston would demonstrate its commitment to the welfare and inclusivity of its residents.

We call upon the Kingston City Council and Honorable Mayor Bryan Paterson to consider the immediate establishment of this essential program. Our city's livability during the winter months is at stake, and together, we can make Kingston a city that supports all its citizens in every season. Please sign this petition to show your support for a better winter living experience in Kingston. Let's ensure our driveways are safe and accessible for all.
