El problema

Chile has everything needed to become one of the world's leading destinations for remote professionals: political stability, breathtaking landscapes, a thriving startup ecosystem, excellent internet infrastructure, and an exceptional quality of life. Few countries can offer such a compelling combination of natural beauty, modern cities, and entrepreneurial opportunity.

Remote work has fundamentally changed how millions of professionals live and work. Countries such as Portugal, Estonia, Spain, Italy, Japan, and Costa Rica have already recognized this shift by introducing Digital Nomad Visas that attract financially independent professionals who earn their income abroad while spending it locally.

Today, many remote professionals who would like to spend a year or two living in Chile have no visa specifically designed for their situation. Instead, they must navigate residence categories created for entirely different purposes, often facing long processing times that can take six to eight months—or even longer.

Digital nomads are highly mobile. They can often choose their next destination within weeks, not months. If obtaining legal permission to live in Chile takes most of a year, many will simply choose another country with a faster and more predictable process.

A dedicated Digital Nomad Visa should therefore be designed with simplicity and speed in mind. Applications should be processed online with clear eligibility requirements and a target processing time of just a few weeks. This would allow Chile to compete internationally for remote professionals while creating a visa tailored to their unique circumstances instead of forcing them into immigration pathways that were never designed for them.

This is not about increasing immigration it is about attracting financially independent professionals who bring foreign income into Chile, support local businesses, and contribute to the economy without competing for local jobs or relying on public services.
