The Issue

For far too long, the motorized trails in Michigan have gone underfunded. Most trails are improved, repaired, or maintained by dedicated volunteer groups under the guidance of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR). These volunteer groups are not only underfunded but are also asked to do more and more every year. If these clubs fail to maintain volunteers, then the trails suffer, and local economies suffer as well.

Motorized trails are vital to the recreational activities in Michigan, attracting tourists, enthusiasts, and families who contribute significantly to local economies. According to the Michigan Snowmobile and ORV Association, motorized recreation generates approximately $3 billion annually for the state's economy. However, the infrastructure required to support this vibrant sector is often neglected due to a lack of focused resources and attention.

Currently, Michigan does not have a dedicated department solely focused on the maintenance, expansion, and improvement of motorized trails. This is a glaring oversight considering the economic and social benefits derived from these trails. By establishing a new department within the state government focusing on motorized trail management, we can ensure sustainable management and growth of this vital recreational resource.

Such a department would coordinate efforts to secure funding, streamline trail maintenance, and promote the expansion of our trail network. With a dedicated team, we can ensure that all motorized trails are safe, scenic, and sustainably managed. Additionally, this department could work closely with volunteer groups and local businesses to foster a collaborative approach that benefits everyone involved.

We are calling upon the State of Michigan to take immediate action by creating this new department. Doing so will not only boost tourism and outdoor activity but also protect the trails that many of us hold dear. Without these motorized trails, many businesses, particularly those in rural areas, would suffer significant losses.

By signing this petition, you urge Michigan lawmakers to recognize the importance and necessity of maintaining our motorized trails. Join us in pushing for the establishment of a dedicated motorized trail management department to ensure these resources continue to thrive for generations to come. Please sign this petition and make your voice heard.
