Create a Demographic for Black/White Biracial People on The US Census Bureau (Mulatto)

The Issue

Objective

We are petitioning to create a demographic group for Biracial people with black and white admixture in The United States Census Bureau. It is important to be a part of an official demographic group to secure grants, medical research, information regarding academic test scores, and socioeconomic statistics. More American children are being born to parents of 2 different races/ethnicities and it is necessary to secure a future for them that respects their heritage with proper representation in the country.

Background

As a biracial (black/white) person myself, I am appreciative of both my African and European ancestry as my family members of my generation have the same background/ethnicity. Many of my cousins are birthed from loving and stable interracial relationships as their parents taught them about both of their heritages. It is necessary to offer people a fair opportunity and voice to participate in our great nation and being biracial shouldn't prevent it. My biracial (black/white) cousins, peers, friends, and colleagues alike yearn for their specific demographic instead of only checking 2 boxes or in some instances, choosing one side over the other to "fit in"

Plan of Action

Our petition will be simple as we intend to set realistic expectations. We seek to obtain 500 signatures and the petition creator will address their city council members for further collaborative efforts. We will seek to gather important demographic data concerning biracial people of black/white admixture and research their status and crucial socioeconomic data to improve their lives. Our ultimate goal is to create an environment that offers economic opportunities, methods to improve our academic standing, business loans/grants, address underlying health issues, and most importantly; our outlook on life.
