Create a commuter train between Carlisle and Harrisburg

Create a commuter train between Carlisle and Harrisburg
The Issue
As an advocate for public transportation all across America, I am passionate about making meaningful improvements in our transit systems. After watching a video of the SMART Train in California, I started to believe that a similar project could tremendously benefit my home state of Pennsylvania, particularly between Carlisle and Harrisburg. Not only would this revitalize the unused Cumberland Valley Railroad Bridge, but it would also significantly alleviate the parking issue faced by residents and commuters in Harrisburg.
Harrisburg, as the capital of Pennsylvania, is bustling with daily activities and the increasing workforce requires efficient, sustainable transportation options. Developing a commuter train route between Carlisle and Harrisburg provides an innovative solution to our traffic and parking challenges. Public transit systems like the SMART Train have been successful out west in reducing carbon emissions, decreasing road congestion, and promoting economic growth, and could do the same here. By utilizing existing infrastructure like the Cumberland Valley Railroad Bridge and modern train technology such as the Nippon Sharyo trains, this project is not only feasible but also cost-effective.
The need for improved public transportation in Central Pennsylvania is clear. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the average American commuter spends approximately 27 minutes each way to work – that’s nearly an hour a day. With a commuter train between Carlisle and Harrisburg, those who work in Harrisburg could save time, reduce their carbon footprint, and enjoy a more pleasant commute.
Furthermore, investing in public transit fuels the economy; building and maintaining commuter trains creates jobs and increases access to local businesses for residents who may not have reliable personal transportation. Cities with extensive public transit systems report higher economic growth as they efficiently connect the workforce with employment opportunities.
It is crucial to take action and bring this vision to life. Implementing a commuter train service between Carlisle and Harrisburg would make a tangible positive impact on our community’s quality of life and set a precedent for future public transportation projects across Pennsylvania. Join me in urging local representatives and transportation authorities to consider and enact this transformative project.
