Safe Female Changing Facilities in Aura!

Aura Netball is a proud supporter of women and girls participating in all sport and physical activity, supporting health and wellbeing. An important part of women and girls participating in sport, is the necessary access of female changing facilities and toilets.

The growing Aura community is becoming a hub of sport and local physical activity, with Football (soccer), Tennis, Rugby league, AFL, Cricket and Tennis facilities to be built as the community grows.

Unfortunately, Stocklands and the Sunshine Coast Council are preparing in 2020 to build a sports district that will not provide safe access to female change rooms and toilets that meet the needs of the Aura community.

The new sports district will include 2 cricket pitches, 4 Rugby League fields and 4 netball courts. Despite the huge numbers of potential girls and women who would love to play these sports, there will only be access to one single female toilet, within a unisex bathroom and no female change facilities provided at all.

As noted by the International Working Group on Women and Sport, “Women’s participation in sport is influenced by the extent, variety and accessibility of facilities. The planning, design and management of these should appropriately and equitably meet the particular needs of the women in the community”.

The sporting facilities being built by Stocklands and designed by the Sunshine Coast Council clearly fails the QLD Governments recommendations on providing safe access to bathrooms and changing facilities for women and girls.

As an active Aura Community, we need to send a clear message to decision makers that failing to provide safe access to change rooms and bathrooms to women and girls participating in sport in a brand new facility in 2020, is not meeting the community needs and simply not good enough!
