The mule deer population of Colorado is under threat and state authorities want to needlessly kill black bears and mountain lions in order to save them.

The Colorado Parks & Wildlife Department (CPW) recently approved a plan to euthanize select black bears and mountain lions. Wildlife ecology experts from Colorado State University have criticized the proposed kill plan, stating in a recent letter to CPW that “plans to test the effects of predator removal are not based in science, and run counter to prior scientific published by CPW’s own researchers.”

Many experts believe a better place to start would be to address the ongoing human-driven destruction to the deer’s natural habitat. Groups like the National Wildlife Federation and The Humane Society point to overdevelopment as the primary source of Colorado’s deer population decline. Unfortunately, the state’s proposed kill plan does NOT do this.

This animal kill plan is based on a faulty premise and is unlikely to solve the underlying issue. Why should innocent wildlife pay for our mistakes?
