Coverage for Abdominoplasty after Hysterectomy as a medically necessity

The Issue

As individuals who have undergone a hysterectomy, we understand the physical and emotional challenges that come with this life-altering surgery. While a hysterectomy is often a necessary procedure, it can result in significant changes to the abdominal area, leading to decreased self-esteem, discomfort, and functional limitations. Abdominoplasty, also known as a tummy tuck, can be a vital step in our recovery and rejuvenation process. Unfortunately, many insurance companies refuse to cover this procedure, deeming it cosmetic rather than medically necessary.

Petition:

We urge insurance companies to recognize the medical necessity of abdominoplasty after a hysterectomy and provide coverage for this procedure. By doing so, you will be acknowledging the importance of comprehensive care and supporting the well-being of individuals who have undergone a hysterectomy.

Reasons for coverage:

- Abdominoplasty is a reconstructive procedure that should be considered as a vital step in restoration of abdominal core muscle strength. The abdominal core is made up of a group of muscles including Rectus Abdominis (six pack muscles), External Obliques, Internal Obliques, Transversus Abdominis, Pyramidalis, Pelvic floor muscles and Multifidus. These muscles help move the trunk. Together, they keep the body stable and balanced, protect the spine, and maintain internal pressure in alleviating discomfort while improving functional abilities.

- The procedure can help prevent future health issues, such as hernias, intestinal complications, pelvic organ prolapse, and chronic pain.

-Reduce stress urinary incontinence which is the involuntary, sudden loss of urine secondary to increased intraabdominal pressure.

-Reduce back pain from weakened core muscles that over-compensate to keep posture.

-Increase exercise intolerance by removing excess skin and will make exercise physically less taxing.

-Decrease skin infections such as Intertrigo which often occur in skin folds like a pannus of the abdomen due to drastic weight loss, removal of organs and growths.

- Coverage will promote gender equality, as men are often granted coverage for similar procedures.

Call to action:

We request that insurance companies:

1. Recognize abdominoplasty as a medically necessary procedure after a hysterectomy.

2. Provide coverage for abdominoplasty, including the surgical procedure and related expenses.

3. Work with healthcare providers to establish clear guidelines for coverage and reimbursement.

Conclusion:

By signing this petition, we unite our voices to advocate for the coverage of abdominoplasty after a hysterectomy. Together, we can make a difference and ensure that individuals receive the comprehensive care they deserve.
