Courts for Kids: “Uniting Charlestown–Whitebridge through sport and space.”

The issue

A Community Campaign for the construction of Basketball facilities in the Charlestown-Whitebridge area.

Dear Councillor Antcliff

We, the undersigned, are writing to propose the addition of a basketball court for recreational use at the Jack Stewart Netball Courts in Charlestown.

Basketball is a rapidly growing sport that strengthens community ties, promotes physical health, and offers a constructive outlet for youth development. Lakers Basketball Club, of which Charlestown-Whitebridge and the surrounding areas are a part, is a testament to this—now the largest community basketball club in the Newcastle area, with over 600 players across nearly 80 teams, the remarkable growth of this club reflects the increasing demand for accessible, high-quality sporting facilities.

The proposed inclusion of a basketball court in the Charlestown-Whitebridge area would be a transformative addition to our recreational landscape. It would provide residents of all ages—from aspiring young athletes to active seniors—with a welcoming space to engage in healthy, inclusive activities. Beyond sport, such a facility would foster social connection, community pride, and lifelong well-being.

With utmost respect and consideration for the Charlestown Netball Association, we believe that the dual use of this space can coexist harmoniously, enhancing the facility's utility without detracting from the existing netball courts. We urge you to consider this proposal and explore the opportunity to create a multi-sport/recreational venue accommodating our community's diverse interests.

We propose the following options for your consideration: (See attached illustration)

Proposal 1: Full Court – Our preferred option, which is the second most cost-effective. It would only require paint and the installation of two hoops on the existing tarmac, having little to no impact on the netball association’s games.

Proposal 2: Half Court with Racquetball Wall – As seen in Reay Park on the corner of Ocean St and Tumut St, Dudley. Although this is the most expensive option, it would not impose on the netball courts at all and with the addition of a racquetball wall would provide even greater recreational activity choices for the community.

Proposal 3: Half Court – Similar to Proposal 1, this option can be executed at minimal cost. Utilizing existing tarmac and only requiring paint and the installation of one hoop, will have little to no impact on the netball association’s games.

Thank you for your time and consideration. We look forward to discussing this proposal further.

Sincerely
