Shut Down and Charge South Bay Rabbit Rescue With Felony Animal Cruelty

Shut Down and Charge South Bay Rabbit Rescue With Felony Animal Cruelty

The Issue

(Red links are live)
Update 8/5/2022 - Despite multiple rabbits suffered and died from neglect under this despicable fraudulent rabbit rescue - Brenda Andringa was Given Diversion With No Justice For The Rabbits.  Once again, authorities disgracefully failed to uphold the law allowing abuses and killers of animals to walk free.

See the "terms" of Diversion and read the email from Katherine R. Carey - Deputy District Attorney Here

3/11/2022 Update - Brenda Angringa's Attorney is requesting diversion.
Without your personal emails she will walk free of her animal cruelty crimes and will be able to reopen another rescue. Please see the emails listed in this update and voice your opinion to oppose diversion before March 15.  It appears the District Attorney’s office did not take this heinous animal cruelty case seriously and only charged Brenda with Misdemeanors therefore, there is nothing to bargain or plea with and Brenda is going to walk free to do it all over again.  Under the guise of a rescue, hundreds of precious animals suffered and died without medical care and lived in deplorable conditions because of Brenda Angringa’s refusal to provide the basic, minimum requirements of care.  This animal cruelty case is no different than abusing dogs or cats.

10/6/2021 Update - Thanks to the brave and caring volunteers and the District Attorney's office see the live link for details -  BRENDA ANDRINGA ACCUSED OF CRUELTY AFTER BUNNY’S DEATH
5/27/21 - Please see updates, SBRR is under Animal Control Investigation.
5/6/2021 - Rabbit HareCules suffered a long, cruel inhumane illness and death under the care of a well known California rabbit rescuer representing herself as a nonprofit rescue, South Bay Rabbit Rescue/Brenda Andringa.

According to volunteers, HareCules allegedly lay suffering for days without Veterinary care, presented diarrhea and was covered in flies until he died.  Fur coated fur with fecal matter invites flies to lay eggs, the maggots feed on the organic matter, start to abrade the skin and then feed on live tissue of the animal.

Witnesses also allege the following:
The “rescued rabbits” live outdoors in fly infested fabric tents unprotected from a wide variety of predators and live in small dog crates where they only have room to lay and stand.  Sick and injured rabbits suffer from untreated medical conditions/Veterinary care.  Rabbit’s are not spayed/neutered, many suffer with heat stroke, fly strike and can be seen in photos covered in urine while living in filthy small cages.  Here you can see a disturbing video of a rabbit with it's nose torn off.

Complaints have been ongoing.  SBRR was previously reported for unethical practices with documented evidence of dumping a non adoptable, live rabbit to a predator center as food. Witnesses allegedly report sick, live and frozen rabbits are regularly sold to predator facilities as food.  It is unclear how many rabbits may have survived or died before they were confiscated/surrendered by animal control on 5/11/2021.

SBRR appears to defraud the public for donations while keeping rabbits in a hoarding type environment consistent of an unethical back yard rabbit breeder, where the rabbits suffer and perish. Nonprofit fraud reports are in order.  Animal rescues are supposed to be a safe haven for animals.  It is not acceptable when animal rescues hoard animals, cause unconscionable repeated pain, suffering, neglect and death to “rescued animals”.

We the Petitioners respectfully request Santa Clara Animal Care & Control investigate and seek prosecution to the fullest extent of California law, shut down SBRR and prevent Brenda Andringa from ever reopening another rabbit rescue.

It is incredibly appalling and disheartening when the rabbit community has to police our own.

For The Rabbits,
Linda Sue

Responded
I have sent an email to the Deputy DA handling this case. I will also forward it to various county officials. Dear DDA Carey, On behalf of the animal rescue community, I am asking you to vigorously oppose diversion in this case. It is important that law enforcement makes an example in this case. A felony conviction, even if the punative sentence is light, will allow imposition of all the same conditions as diversion. But it will also leave her with a record that will help you and other jurisdictions to prevent her from working with animals in the future. It is vital that we don't let this happen again. Too often, people say, "they are just animals." If you spend time with them, you will see that they are little souls. We must honor them, fight for them. We must let others know that this is unacceptable and will be punished.
