Dear Supporters,

Leverhulme Estates, who own 5000 acres of land across Wirral, are now ramping up their campaign to build houses on Green Belt Land. We need to raise funds to stop them!

We are aware that Developers and Landowners, including Leverhulmes, have been surveying fields across Wirral in recent months. Now Leverhulmes are turning on the charm offensive trying to get the local MPs and Councillors on side promising a “new Port  Sunlight”.

But Port Sunlight was built in a different age when land was plenty and we weren’t facing a climate emergency. They pretend they are concerned about Climate Change, Health and Wellbeing and other “big issues” -  but do not be deceived. This is all about building houses on the most profitable green belt land and making money. Lots of money for the Leverhulme Trustees, many of whom reside in London and have little to do with the Wirral.

Leverhulme talk about “enhanced biodiversity, new and enhanced public spaces, modern biodiverse farmlands, enhanced networks of cycleways and footpaths, leisure and tourism facilities, a thriving rural economy”. This is just a smokescreen. These can all be achieved WITHOUT building houses.

Leverhulmes certainly have the money to do these things already. If they really cared about the people of Wirral, and are as philanthropic as the original Lord Lever - as they like to portray, they could quite easily do these things without concreting over the Green Belt for profitable executive houses.

Please donate to our legal fighting fund. Leverhulme and other landowners and developers will have expensive legal representation at the Local Plan public examination.  They will argue, to the Local Plan Inspector that the Council’s proposed Brownfield only policy is not viable and that the only option is for Green Belt to be released for housing.

It is essential that the Wirral Green Belt Alliance also has Legal representation to challenge these landowners at the Local Plan Public Examination.  Legal representation does not come cheap and landowners like Leverhulmes have plenty of money to fund Barristers, QCs and Planning Experts to argue on their behalf.

We want to fund our own legal representation to argue on behalf of the people of Wirral and all the local green space and environmental organisations that we represent. Please donate as much or as little as you can afford. Please do not leave it to others (they may be leaving it to you) All our farms and green spaces are very much still at risk and we can not fight these landowners and developers, at their own game, without your help.

Thank you for your support!

If you wish to tell Leverhulme about what you think of their “vision” for the Green Belt you can do so here:
