Stop MUSE Academy from taking over Brooklyn Music School

Stop MUSE Academy from taking over Brooklyn Music School
The Issue
The students of the Brooklyn Music School are having their school taken away from them. The board of trustees has prioritized the growth of a private school – MUSE Academy - within the very walls of BMS. We are concerned that this take-over will only grow within the new and upcoming '130 Saint Felix' development.
Even though the Board of trustees has “taken action” to address these issues, these resolutions can be easily overturned by a board that has lost the confidence of the community it serves. This is due to an egregious conflict of interest that has placed two key executive members on BOTH THE MUSE AND THE BMS BOARDS. Giving with one hand and taking away with the other.
Thus, we, the undersigned parents and community partners of the Brooklyn Music School, are asking that the following stipulations be placed within the deed and rezoning resolutions of the '130 saint Felix project' as a condition of the $6,000,000 of city funding being received:
- Limiting the square footage available to rent to outside organizations
- Any organization renting cannot provide competing programming to the Brooklyn Music School and must be aligned with its mission in serving the community
- Prospective organizations considered to rent should community partners and cultural in nature. No private schools, regardless of non-for-profit status.
