In an amazing display of community spirit, nearly 100 people filled council chambers tonight to show their support for keeping North Cottesloe beach open to dogs. The mayor commented that this was an "unprecendented" response from the public in relation to a council's proposal and a testament to local government. The council motioned for item 10.4.4 to be moved forward to the beginning of the meeting to allow for those who were there for its discussion to leave after the vote. Several people speak spoke on behalf of the community to emphasise a number of points to the council including the impact this decision would have on local dog owners; that the statements made in opposition to the dog beach were unfounded such as excrement left on the beach and dogs off leads interfering with the public on the footpaths; and the lack of public notice given to the matter in July. Madame Mayor then asked councillors to vote on the officer's recommendation which included keeping the beach open. This was seconded by 3 councillors. The motion to pass the committee's recommendation also had to be moved in order for an amendment to the recommendation be made. This would ultimately allow the councillors to vote in favour of keeping the dog beach open which all councillors bar 1 motioned to pass. I would like to take a moment to remind us all that in light of tonight's amazing result it is important that we all maintain our roles as responsible dog owners for the future of the beach. Please clean up after them as required and ensure they do not hassle cyclists, walkers or visitors to the beach or footpaths above the dunes. For the most part, I think we can all agree we will look out for eachother in regards to these matters. The events of tonight have been example of the power of local communities. Word of mouth, social media, emails and passings along the dog beach all contributed to us keeping one of our iconic landmarks open for our gorgeous furry friends. I would like to personally thank everyone who contributed to this petition and sharing it on to ensure more people knew of the council's plans and had a say in the matter.
