People who drive up North Division regularly ought to know the last thing our area needs is another box store, especially a Costco slated to be 26,000 square feet bigger than the current location.
Rumor that the current Costco location is planned as a future Fred Meyers store should give local residents pause, when 1.3 miles away, a former Fred Meyers location sits vacant, the site of illegal activity and violence. In a recent KHQ news piece, local residents compare that empty building to "a garbage dump."
What's to prevent the current Costco location from going the same way, or the way of the vacant and derelict former Lowe's building, less than a MILE away from the current Coscto location? It has been empty since 2013, and is now going to weeds!
A new, bigger Costco near Farwell road would force the introduction of another traffic light. Are we ready for this part of Spokane to feel even more like the relentless stop and go of Division Street?
What we need are planned developments, planned communities. There are few bundles of acreage left south of Farwell Road which are sizable enough for beautiful, intentional development. Why can't we have a north side Manito Park? And a North Side Kendall Yards?
Petition Spokane's County Commissioners to reconsider this foolhardy development plan.
