Costco named in prominent report for animal cruelty

Dear signers,

I don’t know about you, but lately I’ve been seeing a lot of coverage about “white striping” on social media and the news (it popped up on my Apple News feed). The Humane League, one of the organizations that leads our efforts against Costco, actually just released a study that found this horrible disease in 99% of chicken sold at retailers across the country—including Costco!

If you check out WhiteStripingReport.com, you’ll see that white striping is a disease in chickens that’s caused by the rapid growth that has been bred into meat chickens used in industrial agriculture. The rapid growth causes these white stripes of fats in the muscle. It’s pretty gross and has become more and more common over the years as chickens are bred to grow larger and more quickly. Costco, like other retailers, has the power to switch to slower-growing breeds that wouldn’t have this issue or many other horribly painful health issues. But they continue to refuse.

If you want to learn more, here is some media coverage I found by doing a quick Google search:

Please join me in calling Costco customer service at 425-313-8100 to tell them you know about the white striping in their chicken and urge them to adopt higher welfare standards for chickens to prevent future scandals like this one.

Additionally, please share these articles and the white striping report itself with your networks and on Costco’s social media!

Thank you all!
