We, the undersigned residents of Coronado, call upon our new City Council to hold a special election, or appoint the 3rd place candidate, to fill Mayor-Elect Duncan's vacant Council seat.

For the past 50 years, every Coronado City Council vacancy has been filled by special election. In 2021, City Council repealed our local ordinance requiring a special election, to allow them to appoint when the vacant term was short. Video of the meeting shows that every Councilmember at the time contemplated using appointment only to fill vacancies of 5 months or less. 

Therefore, we ask that our new City Council call immediately for a special election to fill the remaining 2 years of Mayor-Elect Duncan’s term. Otherwise, if Council cannot agree to hold a special election, the only fair alternative is to appoint the 3rd place candidate.
