It seems that patients dying in Treliske Hospital corridors is a less pressing issue than thousands more homes in areas than already cannot cope with traffic, air pollution (St. Austell, at least, is already listed as highly toxic according to CC’s own air quality reports), school places, surgeries, policing and flooding. Perhaps it’s the short change provided by the government to a highly indebted Cornwall Council (circa £2bn including pension shortfall), that is proving too tempting for planners, officers and councillors, in passing through new road plans to accommodate developers’ demands for ever more mass greenfield estates around every Cornish town and village. Note the laughable expression used in the press release below: "Quality new homes". Isn't it the council's job to provide its communities with the essential services it requires, rather than begging the government for scraps of cash to help reach unsustainable housing numbers that are essentially destroying the very communities they purport and have a duty to serve?? Why employ 30-40 expensive council lawyers and other very expensive "experts", if all they do is "follow orders" from central government and its inspectors? Surely any fool can just "follow orders" and build up debt! It’s absurd and a short-term aberration that will inevitably lead to the complete destruction of Cornwall as a unique environmental, social and architectural land and seascape. Our children will not thank us…. PRESS RELEASE "The Government announced yesterday that Cornwall Council has been successful in its bid for money from the Government’s Housing Infrastructure Fund. With delivering quality new homes a priority for Cornwall Council, Cabinet member for Homes Andrew Mitchell today welcomed the announcement that two major projects in Cornwall are set to benefit from government funding which will help the Council unlock the development of much needed housing in Cornwall at two key housing hotspots. Through a competitive bidding process, Cornwall Council has been successful in its bid to government for £5.7m which has been allocated to unlock the redevelopment of Hayle Harbour North Quay. This funding will go towards building road access to support the delivery of 580 homes and commercial development on the north side of Hayle Harbour. Another £2.3m has been earmarked to help regenerate 500 acres of former china clay land and develop a garden village in West Carclaze near St Austell which will bring forward 1,500 new homes as well health and community facilities, a primary school, employment floorspace, leisure facilities and a country park. Cllr Andrew Mitchell said: “I’m delighted to welcome this funding. The highly competitive bidding process saw the Government assess each project on its strategic ambition, benefit to cost ratio and deliverability so the success of our bids shows confidence in the economic and housing strategies developed by the Council to unlock housing development and boost economic growth in Cornwall. It is important that we help to deliver the quality housing that we need for Cornwall which is set out in the Cornwall Local Plan. The Council is committed to being instrumental in the delivery of 1,000 new homes over the next five years.” The Council’s leadership in securing the funding to deliver the road at Hayle Harbour will unlock the building of 583 homes and commercial development. Cornwall Councillor for Hayle North John Pollard said: “This is great news. Cornwall Council has been responsible for improving the area around North Quay over the last few years and gaining this award from Government should unlock the further development and provision of housing which has never been advanced. We need to avoid piecemeal development in this area and its vital that Cornwall Council takes the lead in the use of this money to further boost the opportunities of a prosperous future for Hayle.” Andrew adds: “Similarly, the successful bid for the West Carclaze Garden Village gives us a unique opportunity to deliver 1,500 new homes as part of an attractive and vibrant sustainable new garden village on redundant industrial land. It is a key part of the regeneration of the wider St Austell, St Blazey and the China Clay Area.” John Hodkin, Managing Director of Eco-Bos, which is leading the West Carclaze Garden Village project, said: “We welcome today’s announcement of Government funding as further support and recognition for the West Carclaze Garden Village scheme. This funding allocation underpins key infrastructure elements of our proposals including utilities and services that will need to be brought forward early in phase one. “The project represents a huge opportunity to regenerate and transform former china clay land – creating new homes employment and leisure opportunities – and bringing long-term economic, environmental and social benefits to the new and existing communities in Mid Cornwall. “We are now in the process of working up the details of the first phase and we look forward to being able to share these with the local community in the spring.” Cornwall Council led on the delivery of early infrastructure in the shape of the Carluddon A391 road improvements and the Technology Park, and this latest funding will support the building of more high quality infrastructure which will speed up the delivery of homes as well as support economic growth.
