Contentious plans to build 134 homes (250 to 300 more cars) on a former Ministry of Defence training camp near Newquay have been given the go-ahead, and despite the concerns raised, case officer Tim Marsh (from the Phil Mason school of planning) recommended that the plans be approved by Cornwall Council’s planning committee. The area surrounding the camp, between Perranporth and Newquay, is a designated Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), leaving residents concerned that development could be “damaging and destructive” to wildlife, the coastal path and the protected Penhale Dunes. Among the objectors was the National Trust, which raised a number of concerns. The charity said it was not consulted about the suggested traffic-calming methods and was “sceptical” over whether they will work. www.cornwalllive.com/news/cornwall-news/controversial-plans-build-134-homes-554715
