Ban single-use plastic and polystyrene take-away containers from Conwy seaside cafes/shops

Ban single-use plastic and polystyrene take-away containers from Conwy seaside cafes/shops

The Issue

It was nice to see tourists and locals alike enjoying the seafront in Colwyn Bay and Rhos-on-Sea after the lockdown, but not so good to witness people throwing their litter over the railings onto the beach. This litter will end up in the sea where it causes harm to the sea-life and takes many hundreds of years to breakdown.

Every single piece of plastic that has ever been created still exists today and by allowing our seafront stores and cafes to serve take-away food, drinks and ice-cream in single-use plastic containers, we are sending the message that we don't care about the marine-life that we live so close to.

We have an opportunity to demonstrate that Conwy can be a progressive County that cares about not only our local environment but the planet as a whole.

There are many biodegradable alternatives to plastic and polystyrene available, they are inexpensive and breakdown much more easily without causing harm to the environment. Adding a few pence to the cost of a portion of chips to cover the additional cost of a biodegradable container also sends the message to the consumer that we are a people that care about our seafront.

There are no excuses to not care. People littering is unacceptable but unavoidable as ignorance will always be coming to our local environment. At least we, as locals, can minimise the impact they have. Yes, tourists will bring single-use plastic with them, we can't stop that, but we can minimise the effects but not adding to the problem ourselves.

Please sign and encourage others to sign also, your support and care for our seafront is appreciated.
