The Issue

My son was nearly hit at the pedestrian crossing by North Weston Hall on Clevedon Road in Portishead North Somerset. The crossing is on a straight 30 zone where cars often drive a lot faster. Even though he had got off his bicycle to clearly indicate his intention to cross, a car raced past, nearly causing a tragic accident. It was a heart-stopping moment for both him and me, and a stark reminder of the dangers posed by this unmanaged, high-traffic crossing.

This crossing is not just used by my son; it's a crucial route for many local schoolchildren who walk to local primary and secondary schools, go to the bus stop, go into town and soon go to the new train station. The pedestrian crossing is also used by many children, elderly and the disabled using the village hall. The volume of cars has increased significantly, yet drivers fail to stop in time on a daily basis.

Sadly, over the years this crossing is known to be dangerous to residents after there have been several severe and minor accidents and hundreds of near-miss incidents where both children and adults narrowly escaped being hit by speeding vehicles.

With a rise in environmental awareness and efforts to promote healthy lifestyles, more and more families are choosing to walk or cycle to school or take public transportation. However, without a safely managed crossing, parents are anxious about their children’s safety. A signal-controlled pedestrian crossing would alleviate these fears, ensuring children can cross securely and encouraging more people to make environmentally friendly transportation choices.

Statistics show that controlled crossings significantly reduce the likelihood of pedestrian accidents. The Department for Transport's data indicates that these crossings offer a safer alternative, particularly in school zones where young pedestrians are frequent users.

By converting the Clevedon Road crossing into a signal-controlled one, we offer a proactive solution that not only prioritizes our children's safety but also supports environmental and health benefits.

Please join me in urging North Somerset council to take immediate action for the safety of our community, before a tragic accident happens. Your signature can make a difference. Sign this petition to transform the North Weston Hall crossing into a signal-controlled crossing today!
