It has been almost two years now, that COVID has disrupted our lives. Everyone was forced to lock themselves inside their houses for the greater good. It was understandable at that point because we knew nothing about the disease. Fast forward to today, almost 80% of BC is fully vaccinated and 30% have already received the booster shot. It is important to note that vaccines are available for anyone who is willing to get them. It has been found that Omicron is significantly less potent than the previous variants. B.C.’s Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry has indicated that based on our experience in B.C. and internationally, educational settings are low-risk for COVID-19 transmission. BCIT has been in-person since the beginning of the year and has had no issues with the virus. As long as we are all vaccinated and follow the guidelines, in-person classes will be safe.

Ever since COVID first emerged, other major aspects of life have been overlooked. Factors such as mental health, different learning styles, social connections, and on-campus support, just to mention a few. The most significant effect has been on the quality of education. To be able to learn properly, having a suitable environment is key, and for a lot of students, that place is not the place they live at. Lack of interaction has left a big dent in students' mental health. One survey by YoungMinds reported that 83% of young respondents agreed that the pandemic worsened pre-existing mental health conditions, mainly due to school closures, loss of routine, and restricted social connections.

It is understood that there are other issues that are not addressed above. So, for students who do not want to attend in-person classes, we ask that SFU keep the online sections to be fair to them. We don't want to force anyone to come in person and we don't want to be forced to stay online for another semester. SFU can have the majority of the sections online but please also include a few sections for students and professors who prefer in-person learning.
