Construct a Sidewalk on Old Columbia Pike to Improve Pedestrian Safety

The Issue

Old Columbia Pike sees heavy pedestrian traffic and is currently without sidewalks, causing potential safety risks for residents. We urge Mason District Supervisor Jimenez to take swift action for our community by building a sidewalk on Old Columbia Pike. The request could be considered in two phases:

Phase 1: connect the pedestrian path on Elmdale Road to the Mason District Park trail off Old Columbia Pike.

Phase 2: sidewalk from Elmdale Road to Lincolnia Road along Old Columbia Pike.

Pedestrian infrastructure, such as sidewalks, is not just a matter of convenience but elementary to safeguard the residents. This route is used frequently by pedestrians: neighbors walking to the Barcroft shopping center, children going to the Forest Hollow Pool, dog walkers and joggers utilizing the loop around Pinecrest. The magnitude of the pedestrian use along this road is evident by the walking paths visible through the narrow grass shoulders and the simple observation if you travel this road you will always see pedestrians. Yet there are no sidewalks! From the path along Elmdale Road and the crosswalk for the path to Mason District Park, there is a blatant missing section that invites pedestrians to gamble with unsafe travel along the roadway.

Our community deserves safe and accessible sidewalks that encourage outdoor activity and connectivity. We respectfully request that Mason District Supervisor Jimenez prioritize this and enhance pedestrian safety by building the requested sidewalk. Please sign this petition to support a safer Mason District for all.
