I am a resident of West Mifflin, PA and every day, I see numerous cats wandering our streets with no home. These abandoned animals are not only cats but also include dogs and other pets who have been left to fend for themselves. This situation is heartbreaking and needs immediate attention.

In the United States alone, approximately 6.5 million companion animals enter U.S. animal shelters nationwide every year (ASPCA). In Pennsylvania specifically, over 130,000 pets are surrendered to shelters annually (PSPCA). Many of these animals are strays like the ones we see in our neighborhood.

We propose the construction of an animal shelter in West Mifflin that can provide these abandoned creatures with food, medical care and a warm place to stay until they find their forever homes. This shelter would not only serve as a safe haven for these innocent lives but also help control the population of stray animals in our community.

The presence of such an institution would reflect our community's commitment towards animal welfare and set an example for other neighborhoods facing similar issues.
