Construct a Noise Barrier between 481 and Soule Road near exit 12, New York State
The Issue
For many of us living in Pinegate North, Streamwood/Fairway East, and Burning Tree, the incessant noise from traffic on Highway 481 has become unbearable. Our once peaceful backyards are now filled with the constant roar of vehicles. We can't enjoy our outdoor spaces without having to raise our voices to be heard. At night, we're forced to sleep with earplugs just to get some rest. This is not just an inconvenience; it's a significant disruption of our quality of life.
My family and I have lived in our current house since 1998. Back then, the only stores on Route 31 were Wegmans/Chase-Pitkin, Walmart and Sam's Club. Over the last 26 years, residents have noticed a marked increase in traffic noise levels. Conversations with neighbors and others in surrounding areas confirm that this is not an isolated issue but one that affects us all.
Noise pollution isn't just annoying—it's harmful too. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), excessive noise can lead to health problems such as stress-related illnesses, poor concentration, productivity losses in the workplace and school learning impairments among children.
We urge New York State authorities to take immediate action by erecting a noise barrier between Highway 481 and Soule Road—a solution proven effective at reducing highway noise pollution according to studies conducted by Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).
By signing this petition you are standing up for your right—and ours—to peace and quiet in our homes and neighborhoods. Let's reclaim our tranquility from relentless traffic noise! Please sign this petition today!
