Constant, Intrusive, and Unavoidable: M1 Traffic Noise in Oxenford

The issue

Over the past decade, traffic volumes in the northern Gold Coast have grown significantly. Residents of Oxenford are experiencing increasing traffic noise from the Pacific Motorway (M1) and the adjoining Old Pacific Highway corridor. What was once manageable background noise has become constant, intrusive, and unavoidable.

For those Oxenford residents nearby to the M1, the sounds of trucks, motorcycles, sirens, and car tires are scattered through every moment spent in their home, yard, and community surroundings. This is not just an inconvenience - it is affecting people’s daily lives. Residents are reporting:

•         Difficulty enjoying natural conversations and time spent in outdoor spaces like their decks, patios, and yards

•         Difficulty sleeping

•         Constant background noise inside their homes

•         Stress, fatigue, and reduced wellbeing

•         A loss of peace, privacy, and quiet enjoyment of their own homes and amenity

Some Oxenford residents have tried individually to get action via The QLD Transport and Main Roads and other state authorities. To date there has been no assistance or suggestions for future traffic noise mitigation strategies. There remain sections of the M1 through Oxenford - including parts of an 8–10 lane highway - where no noise barriers exist, leaving homes directly exposed. At the same time, traffic from the Old Pacific Highway adds to the overall noise, creating a continuous and cumulative impact on residents.

For families, shift workers, elderly residents, and those working from home, the impacts are significant. With ongoing population growth across the northern Gold Coast, traffic volumes will continue to increase. Without action, these impacts will only get worse.

What we are asking for –

We are calling on the Queensland Government to:

•         Undertake a current assessment of traffic noise impacts on local Oxenford residents

•         Install noise barriers along unprotected sections of the M1 through Oxenford

•         Implement effective noise reduction measures that reflect today’s traffic conditions

•         Provide clear communication to the community on what actions will be taken and when

Why this matters –

Everyone deserves to feel comfortable and safe in their own home. The current situation is not sustainable for our community. Oxenford residents should not be left to bear the growing impacts of a major transport corridor without appropriate protections in place.

Call to action –

We are asking residents, neighbours, and supporters to sign this petition. By working together, we hope to help bring attention to an issue that is affecting the health, wellbeing, and quality of life of our Oxenford community.
