I am not writing this as someone who has only read about child abuse in the news. I am writing this as someone who lived through it.

When I was just eight years old, I experienced abuse within my own family. At an age when children should feel safe, protected, and loved, I instead lived with fear and confusion. Childhood should be filled with happy memories, laughter, and security, but for many survivors like me, those years are marked by pain that follows us into adulthood. This is why I am calling for the reintroduction of the death penalty for the most serious crimes against children.

The protection of children should be one of the highest priorities of any society. However, every year, heinous crimes against children are reported, leaving victims and their families with lifelong physical and psychological scars. Statistics reveal that cases of child abuse and exploitation are alarmingly high. According to the National Children's Alliance, in the United States alone, nearly 700,000 children are abused annually. On a global scale, the World Health Organization estimates that up to a billion children aged 2–17 years have experienced physical, sexual, or emotional violence or neglect in the past year.

For the most extreme and egregious cases of child abuse—where lives are irreparably damaged and justice seems elusive—our current legal system often fails to deliver adequate punishment. This disconnect between crime severity and punitive measures leaves society questioning its commitment to protect its most vulnerable members.

While opposition to the death penalty is based on the potential for judicial error and ethical concerns, the crimes in question here are often unequivocally heinous and beyond the pale of normal human comprehension. The reintroduction of the death penalty for such cases needs rigorous stipulations and comprehensive evidence standards to mitigate wrongful convictions.

This proposition may seem drastic, but without substantial deterrents, what message do we convey about the value of a child's life? The potential for extraordinary consequences could serve as a powerful deterrent against those who might think to harm a child.
