On April 23, 2018, I and several fellow constituents met with Rod Blum. We had been requesting a meeting with him since January 2017. This meeting was held at the Federal Courthouse in Cedar Rapids, IA. During my meeting, I asked Congressman Blum to divest of his fossil fuel investments and gave him a copy of this petition which shows that hundreds of his constituents also want him to divest. Up to that point in the meeting, Congressman Blum seemed to be listening and receptive to what I had to say. When I made this request, the mood in the room changed, and he did not directly respond to my request. He referred me to Jack Mescher, his district director who was also in the room, to discuss these issues further. On June 20, 2018, I had a phone conversation with Jack Mescher. Most of the conversation concerned issues of immigration, but near the end of the conversation, I asked Jack if Congressman Blum had spoken about divesting of his fossil fuel investments. Jack responded that he had heard nothing about this from Congressman Blum, and that furthermore it was rather "unseemly" (his word) for me to request Congressman Blum to divest of his fossil fuel investments. If Congressman Blum's staff thinks asking our member of Congress to divest from companies that pollute our air and water is "unseemly" we need to show Congressman Blum we mean business. If Congressman Blum thinks he can make money off of companies that exacerbate climate change, he should not represent Iowa's 1st District. The 2018 Election season has begun. We need to send Congressman Blum a message that Iowa's First District does not want a representative in Congress who makes money off of dirty, out-of-state, oil and gas companies. Share this petition with your friends and neighbors here in Iowa's 1st District and ask them to sign it.
