Former Louisville, Kentucky Detective Mark Handy -- pictured above -- sent four innocent men to prison. Handy apparently subscribed to a victim-centered philosophy, which robbed Handy of his sense of objectivity and respect for the truth.
In one case, Handy taped over a surveillance camera that might have pointed to the real killer. As a result, Edwin Chandler spent 10 years in prison because of the police officer's dishonesty. “Nothing can replace what I have lost.” Chandler said during the sentencing hearing. The “criminal justice system is broken.”
Chandler, who was convicted in 1995 for the robbery and murder of convenience store clerk Brenda Whitfield, was exonerated in 2009, according to a local news account.
On May 11, Mark Handy was sentenced to one year in prison.
According to the National Registry of Exonerations, one-third of all wrongful convictions are linked to police investigative misconduct.
Sincerely,
