Today, UK officials released a review of a high-profile police investigation into the allegations of sex abuse leveled by Carl Beech, who was known as "Nick." Beech claimed he had been abused as a child by high-level figures such as former Prime Minister Sir Edward Heath, former Labour Member of Parliament Lord Janner, and others.
In July, Beech was convicted on 12 counts of perverting the course of justice and sentenced to a 18-year prison sentence.
The 400-page report represents a stinging indictment of investigative methods similar to "Start By Believing". The analysis concludes,
- “The principal cause of the many failures in this investigation was poor judgement and a failure to accurately evaluate known facts and to react to them.
- “A major contributing factor was the culture that ‘victims’ must be believed.
- “Whilst the responsible officers assert that they kept an open mind, several failures can only be explained by an unwarranted and disproportionate belief in ‘Nick's’ credibility.”
Beech's fantastical claims compelled judges to issue search warrants to search persons' homes, which resulted in “dreadful adverse consequences” for those falsely accused.
