#MeToo emerged on the national scene in 2017 in the wake of allegations of sexual misconduct against media mogul Harvey Weinstein.
The stated goals of the #MeToo movement are to encourage survivors of sexual assault to speak out and achieve healing, goals that everyone agrees with. But is #MeToo also seeking to remove fundamental due process protections and slant investigations against the accused?
Increasingly, we are seeing #MeToo programs that advocate for "trauma-informed" approaches. Here are two recent examples:
- #MeToo, #NowWhat: Trauma-Informed Response on the Diverse College Campus: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/metoo-nowwhat-trauma-informed-response-on-the-diverse-college-campus-tickets-54976734894
- Trauma-informed Care for All Veterans: #METOO & Beyond: https://www.acesconnection.com/blog/trauma-informed-care-for-all-veterans-metoo-and-beyond
If trauma-informed was limited to the counseling and therapeutic context, that would be fine. But in the investigative and adjudicative setting, it's not appropriate.
In a nutshell, that's the problem with trauma-informed.
