Today marks three years since the mass shooting at Sandy Hook School. Three years ago, my mother survived one of the most horrific days in our country’s recent history. Twenty first graders and six of my mother’s colleagues were murdered in their sacred space of learning. Since that day, nearly 100,000 Americans have been killed by gun violence. A motto that came from my town after 12/14/2012 was “Honor With Action.” You can honor the lives taken with action by doing acts of kindness, hugging your loved ones a little tighter, and by demanding change from our leaders to help end gun violence once and for all. As you know, I have recently been advocating to #EndTheBan. It is one way I honor with action. Gun violence is a public health issue and it’s outrageous that funding to research mass shootings is unavailable. According to House Democrats, the federal government dedicates $240 million a year on traffic safety research, $233 million a year on food safety, and $331 million a year on the effects of tobacco.
