It is only mid-February and there have already been 30 school shootings since 2018 has begun. The most recent shooting we are aware of is the Valentine's Day shooting in Florida by an angry student, Nikolas Cruz, who was expelled from his high school. He used an AR-15 rifle to kill 17 students and staff, who were finishing up their school day. He had all the warning signs of a possible threat to that high school, was even reported to authorities prior to this, and nothing was done.
On October 1st, 2017, during the Route 91 Festival in Las Vegas, Nevada, 58 innocent people were massacred by Stephen Paddock by using bump stocks from his hotel room, which made his semi-automatic weapons become automatic. In addition, he had a collection of assault weapons in his procession. Hotel security didn't seem to question that he had huge bags of what we now know were weapons, and he kept making multiple trips to and from his car to bring these weapons to his room, in which he was staying alone.
And let us not forget on December 14, 2012, when Adam Lanza shot and killed 20 innocent elementary school children and 6 staff members at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Twenty innocent children who will never get to grow up to be a firefighter, a teacher, or even hug their parents one last time.
It makes me sick. Regardless of how you feel on politics, this nation needs to come together and put a stop to this. Innocent people are dying due to these violent crimes. The AR-15 has a purpose for "hunting", many have argued including the organization titled the Gun Owners of California, but this weapon is not being used for this purpose. It is being used to kill innocent people, whether their reasons are because they are angry at the system who failed them, like Nikolas and his anger building up with his experience at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, or with Stephen Paddock, who we still don't even know his reasons for the massacre in Las Vegas, except for the fact that he was interested in doing this to several other groups of people in different locations including Santa Monica.
Working in schools and with children, it scares me to think that something could happen in my schools I work in. The schools where our students are supposed to grow, to learn, and be safe. It scares me that these shootings can happen anywhere, and our government has not done anything about it. There has been much debate on gun laws, but Congress needs to come to an agreement. We need these assault weapons out of our reach. We need more safety precautions in public areas and schools in which will better protect our citizens, including our most vulnerable, our children. Please sign this petition to show Congress that we are serious, and we DEMAND reform in our gun laws. These mass shootings need to stop, and your signature will be the first step in doing so. Thank you.
