Stop selling Nestlé water
The Issue
For years, Nestlé has been contributing to the drought in California by pumping hundreds of millions of gallons of water each year. They draw from multiple sources, and the California Forest Service has never monitored the impacts of the bottled water business on streams in two watersheds that Nestlé draws from, which supply water to sensitive wildlife habitats. Nestlé's permit to pump water expired twenty-seven years ago, yet nothing has been done about it. It could also potentially take two more years to renew the permit. In the meantime, Nestlé will continue to take millions of gallons of water from California. Not only are they pumping out water that the state desperately needs, but they are massively profiting off of it.
The second issue with Nestlé is that their CEO has stated that he believes water is not a human right. Drinking water is a human right under California law and our public right to drinking water must be the priority over corporate profiteering of our water supply.
He directly says, "The one opinion, which I think is extreme, is represented by the NGOs [non-governmental organizations], who bang on about declaring water a public right. That means that as a human being, you should have a right to water. That's an extreme solution. And the other view says that water is a foodstuff like any other, and like any other foodstuff it should have a market value. Personally, I believe it's better to give foodstuff a value."
By continuing to sell this water to students, CVUSD and Westlake High School are directly supporting everything Nestlé has done and said. Westlake should switch to a different source of water that is bottled out of California.
