The issue
For years, students and parents at Berrinba East State School have faced an ongoing nightmare. Our children are being bullied, injured both physically and emotionally, and instead of receiving support, we are often led to believe that it's our fault. Principals deny that there are any issues, claiming that everything is under control, but the reality for those affected is very different.
My child, like many others, has suffered at the hands of bullies, and even worse, it seems there are instances where teachers themselves are contributing to this toxic environment by picking on students. Despite numerous attempts to reach out—through phone calls, emails, and in-person visits—our concerns are brushed off and ignored. The result? Our children’s mental health is in jeopardy, and for some, their very lives are at risk as they grapple with feelings of worthlessness and despair.
Statistics show that bullying can have serious long-term effects on mental health, contributing to anxiety, depression, and even suicidal thoughts. The very place that should be a safe haven for learning and growth, has become a source of fear and distress for many students.
We cannot continue to let this slide under the rug. It is imperative that Berrinba East State School undergoes an immediate, thorough investigation to uncover the extent of the bullying and identify measures that can be implemented to create a safer and more nurturing environment.
We demand the involvement of independent regulatory bodies to ensure a transparent and unbiased review process. This investigation should include anonymous surveys of students, parent interviews, and a review of current school policies on bullying. Furthermore, there must be mandatory training for teachers and staff on identifying and addressing bullying effectively.
Change must start at the top. It is time for Berrinba East State School to be held accountable, provide solutions, and most importantly, protect our children. We owe it to our kids to fight for a safe and welcoming school, where they can thrive without fear of harassment or discrimination.
Please sign this petition to advocate for a thorough investigation into these serious issues and to demand action from the leadership at Berrinba East State School.
