The Issue

Jagadguru Sri Adi Shankaracharya, the great architect of Sanatana Dharma who unified Bharat spiritually, culturally, and geographically through the establishment of the four Amnaya Peethas was subjected to derogatory and insulting language in a performance staged during the Paryaya program at the Udupi Rajangana. This has caused deep hurt to the religious sentiments of crores of devotees.

Adi Shankaracharya, born in the 8th century CE in Kaladi, Kerala, is revered across India as the philosopher who systematized Advaita Vedanta and established the four Amnaya Peethas in Sringeri, Dwarka, Puri, and Jyotirmath that continue to guide millions of Hindus today. The Udupi Rajangana, where this incident occurred, is itself one of the most sacred and widely recognized platforms in the Dvaita tradition, visited by lakhs of devotees and pilgrims each year.

For a figure of this stature to be mocked in a public, ticketed cultural program is not a minor lapse,  it sets a precedent that no acharya, regardless of tradition, is safe from public ridicule on the very grounds meant to honor spiritual heritage. Many of us signing this petition are devotees, students of Vedanta, or residents of Udupi who have grown up attending the Paryaya festivities with pride. We are not asking for censorship of art broadly we are asking that public reverence and basic dignity be maintained when it comes to genuinely revered religious figures on sacred public platforms.

Through this petition, we place the following demands before the concerned authorities:

  • Immediately stop and condemn any form of derogatory remarks or performances directed at Jagadguru Sri Adi Shankaracharya.
  • Take appropriate action to ensure sacred public platforms like the Rajangana are not used to insult revered gurus, and review any publications (such as Manimanjari and similar works) found to contain objectionable content about him.
  • Preserve mutual respect and harmony among the different traditions within Sanatana Dharma, without personal attacks on any acharya or lineage.

Please sign and support this campaign to uphold the honor and legacy of Jagadguru Adi Shankaracharya. Your signature helps carry this voice strongly before the authorities.
