The Issue

Senator Ruben Gallego's recent remarks targeting transgender youth have left many of us in Arizona, and across the nation, feeling disheartened and outraged. These comments serve to perpetuate harmful stereotypes and discrimination against an already vulnerable community, undermining the principles of equality and inclusion that are fundamental to our society.

Transgender youth face significant challenges, including higher rates of mental health issues, bullying, and discrimination. According to The Trevor Project, over 40% of transgender youth have seriously considered suicide. This statistic is indicative of the severe pressures they experience. When influential leaders, like Senator Gallego, make derogatory statements, it exacerbates these struggles, reinforcing the stigma and prejudice transgender youth face daily.

We urge Senator Gallego to publicly retract his comments and set up a meeting with members of the trans community. By doing so, he can affirm his commitment to fostering an inclusive environment and recognize the dignity of all individuals, regardless of their gender identity.

Additionally, we call on the Senator to actively support legislation that protects the rights of transgender youth. There are effective measures that can be enacted to prevent discrimination and provide much-needed support services. Focus should be directed towards ensuring that schools implement anti-bullying programs and that mental health resources are readily available to all students.

We invite concerned citizens of Arizona and beyond to stand with us against discrimination and support the rights of transgender individuals. Sign this petition to show that transphobia has no place in our state or anywhere else.
