Condemn Disney for their revision of Snow White

Condemn Disney for their revision of Snow White
The Issue
We, the undersigned, condemn the makers of the new Snow White film for their blatant disregard and cultural insensitivity towards a beloved European folktale, recognized by UNESCO as an integral part of the world's cultural heritage. The Grimm brothers' original story, 'Snow White', is a treasured part of Europe's shared cultural legacy, and its adaptation into the 88-year-old classic Disney film has become an iconic representation of Western cultural heritage.
Furthermore, we are appalled by the anti-white and anti-man comments made by the film's cast and crew, which demonstrate a profound lack of respect for the cultural significance and nostalgia surrounding this timeless tale.
Notably, Rachel Zegler, who unfortunately stars as Snow White, has made remarks perceived as dismissive of the story’s white, European roots and its traditional values, such as her 2022 Extra TV interview where she called the 1937 film 'extremely dated' and criticized its focus on a 'love story with a guy who literally stalks her,' labeling it 'weird.'
These comments, alongside her insistence in a Variety interview that 'she’s not going to be saved by the prince' and 'not going to be dreaming about true love' but instead chasing leadership, have been seen by critics as anti-male, rejecting the prince’s role and the story’s celebration of traditional gender roles.
Additionally, Zegler’s casting as a non-European actress prompted outrage from those who see it as erasing the character’s 'skin as white as snow' identity—an affront to white European heritage—with some interpreting her defense of the casting as a slap in the face to our cultural legacy.
Director Marc Webb, in a 2023 Telegraph interview, further insulted this heritage by claiming the story needed to 'reflect the times we’re in,' a statement that dismisses the enduring value of our traditions in favor of hollow revisionism.
We demand that the filmmakers take responsibility for their actions and consider the impact of their choices and harmful comments on the cultural heritage of the tale of Snow White and the collection of Kinder und Hausmärchen as a whole.
