Concern About Increased Pharmacist License Renewal Fees
Concern About Increased Pharmacist License Renewal Fees
The Issue
We, the undersigned Illinois pharmacists and pharmacy professionals, respectfully express our concern about the recent increase in pharmacist license renewal fees to $350 — more than double the prior fee without clear justification.
This increase comes at a time when pharmacist salaries have not kept pace with inflation, yet costs to maintain professional credentials continue to rise.
For new graduates entering the profession — many already carrying significant student loan debt — the cost to become licensed in Illinois is substantial. Typical expenses include:
NAPLEX & MPJE exam application and testing fees, both required to practice; total testing costs (NAPLEX + MPJE) can exceed several hundred dollars.
State licensing application fee (previously around $75, now $400).
Background check and other administrative fees.
Together, these costs can total well over $1,000 for initial licensure.
Furthermore, fee increases are not limited to the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation — costs from national and other state bodies (e.g., NABP exam fees) are also rising, adding to the financial strain on licensees.
We believe licensure fees should reflect economic reality and promote access to the profession, not create financial barriers — especially given evolving technology that should improve efficiency and reduce administrative costs.
We respectfully request that your administration review and reconsider the current fee structure, including transparency around revenue use and possible fee reductions, to ensure licensure remains fair and sustainable for all Illinois pharmacists.
Thank you.
