Single File Please

May 30, 2018
Hi everyone,
Thanks to all of you for your terrific support in reaching the 100,000 milestone. Also, we'd like to apologise for any marketing emails you've been receiving from change dot org. We didn't realise that was part of "the price to pay" for starting this petition. But to be fair, the good folk at change dot org are offering this service for free.
First, some current thoughts on the process thus far? Well, it seems the cycling lobby really REALLY doesn't like what's happening here. Perhaps the reason is this... what we're seeing is all of us, collectively, are part of what's known as "people power" and the cycling lobby hasn't had to confront this before. Indeed, for at least 10 years, the cycling lobby has been selling a dream that we can solve our looming traffic crisis if we can just get everyone riding bikes. Well, on paper that sounds a great idea. And certainly our various State governments are looking for any magic bullet they can find, hence the cycling lobby has enjoyed quite an uninterrupted run of influence over our various State gov's regarding cycling this past decade.
But slowly a certain reality is becoming clear to most Australians. A country like The Netherlands for example is only 1/6th the size of Victoria, and even in the height of summer the overnight ambient temperature is still only 12 degrees Celsius. That's not the case in Australia. We have huge distances to travel PLUS this is a hot country. Cycling simply isn't a workable alternative for many millions of Australians - especially if you have young children.
Indeed, the cycling lobby is so desperate to keep sticking their fingers in their ears regarding this Petition they're claiming up to 80,000 or more of your signatures are fake! Now, think about that for a moment.... we know that every one of you are all legit. But the cycling lobby are determined not to accept this could possibly be true. That's how hard this battle is going to be in some respects. It's abundantly clear they're not going to change their behaviour unless the relevant legislation itself changes.
On that note, the transport requirements which Australia needs to solve are rather unique to Australia and cycling realistically can't solve those requirements because the solution to making cycling safe on a truly massive scale in Australia also requires huge investment into cycling specific infrastructure. Put another way, we're talking a completely separate road system that neither cars nor pedestrians can use. Well, clearly that's not a viable alternative either because that's going to cost billions and billions of dollars.
In reality the battle for limited road space is set to continue for a long time yet because the truth is, as a nation we've dropped the ball on public transport. What we needed 20 years ago were loads of new train lines and subways and trams in every city. That sort of thing. Accordingly, this is why Compulsory Single File remains necessary, moving forward. We're scheduled to add at least another 1.4 million registered vehicles to our roads in the next 4 years for example!
So, in closing, thanks everyone and let's keep spreading the word. Compulsory Single File won't stop people from cycling, it will simply help traffic flow more safely for everyone concerned - especially when a bike lane is present.
Kind Regards, Ian Mayberry and the team.
