The Issue

Four years ago, like hundreds of thousands of others, I installed foam spray loft insulation in my home. The driving force behind this decision was a combination of expected long-term reduction in energy costs and an earnest desire to minimize my carbon footprint. The government's introduction of a grant scheme advocating this type of insulation boosted my confidence in the efficiency of this method. Although I wasn't a beneficiary of the grant, I, along with many other homeowners, perceived the program as an endorsement of the tried and trusted nature of this insulation method.

However, the reality has been quite different. We now understand there are a host of unwanted issues associated with this type of insulation which negatively affects the saleability of houses containing this type of roof insulation. Most mortgage lenders and equity release companies are refusing to  accept clients with spray foam installed.

It is estimated that more than 300,000 properties are affected, some of which received government grants towards the work, while others were persuaded by the apparent government backing that this was a tried, tested and regulated method of improving home insulation. Having already paid between £30 and £70 per square metre to install the spray foam insulation, homeowners now face even greater expense to have it removed!

Through this petition, we call upon authorities to rectify this situation promptly. Firstly, by recognizing the adverse impact this has had on affected homeowners, and setting up a means of issuing fitting compensation.

Secondly, by ensuring stricter regulation of insulation providers to stop similar instances in the future. We propose mandatory compliance checks and stringent industry standards which must be met, to corroborate the safety and efficacy of insulation methods before they are marketed to unsuspecting homeowners.

We, the affected homeowners, are compelled to cast a light on this issue, as we bear the unwanted consequences of what was marketed to us as a beneficial eco-friendly choice.

It's time for our voices to be heard and for the necessary changes to be implemented. Please, sign this petition, to demand fair treatment of those affected and greater protection for all homeowners.
