There’s something important happening this week in Banning that directly impacts the future of our land, community, and environment 🌿
On March 24, the City Council is considering a proposal to rezone 41 acres at Mt. San Jacinto College near Sunset Ave & Westward Ave from “public/school use” to very high-density housing.
Here’s what’s not being clearly said:
This change is directly tied to the Sunset Crossroads project.
In order to convert large areas of land into commercial and industrial use, the city must “relocate” over 1,100 housing units somewhere else to comply with state law.
👉 This rezoning is where those units are being moved.
That means:
• Natural land + habitat could be rezoned for dense housing
• The character of this area could change significantly
• This decision helps enable the larger Sunset Crossroads development
No actual housing plan has been proposed yet—but approving this zoning opens the door for it.
This is a key moment.
