Petition updateCommunity Vision to Protect Sunset Crossroads Over Industrial ExpansionCommunity Question: Is There Interest in a Referendum?

Many residents have asked whether a referendum could allow voters to weigh in on the Sunset Crossroads approval. I’m sharing this update to understand whether the community has interest in exploring that option. Express your interest here.

I want to sincerely thank everyone who signed the petition, attended meetings, shared information, and spoke up during this process. Community engagement matters, and your voices were heard throughout the discussion.

On March 10, the Banning City Council voted 4–1 to approve the Sunset Crossroads Specific Plan, including the General Plan amendment, zone change, and environmental impact report.

Since the vote, many residents have been asking what options remain.

One possibility that may exist is a community referendum, which in some cases allows residents to gather signatures to place a recently approved land-use decision before voters. Because this option has a limited timeframe and requires significant organization, it would only be possible if there is enough community interest and support to pursue it together.

Unfortunately, Change.org petition signatures are likely not legally usable for the referendum petition.  So we will be starting from scratch.

I cannot lead such an effort on my own. However, if members of the community are interested in helping explore this option, I am willing to help connect people and share information.

If you've already signed here (or not), let us know if you'd like to participate by:

• be willing to sign a referendum petition

• be willing to help collect signatures

• be willing to help coordinate volunteers

• or have legal, election, or land-use experience that could guide the process

At this stage, I am simply trying to understand whether there is enough community interest and capacity to explore a referendum effort. Please share your interest here!

Thank you again to everyone who cared enough about our community to participate in this process.
