Stop the Proposed Takeover of Public Parkland by the American Museum of Natural History

The Issue

• The American Museum of Natural History (AMNH), a private institution, is pushing to build a massive new structure that will extend beyond its existing footprint and eat into Theodore Roosevelt Park, which surrounds it, destroying venerable trees and gardens, and a valued quiet space for residents and visitors.

• Despite the wonders of Central Park, New York City has fewer public green spaces than most major cities. And while we as New York City residents love the Museum and support educational endeavors, we feel this plan is reckless and destructive and has to be stopped.

• The AMNH is a private organization and cannot be allowed to develop public parkland for its private purposes. It is morally wrong to do so, and sets a dangerous precedent for all developers, who see green spaces as potential sources of private income that can be taken from the public.

• The American Museum of Natural History is one of the world’s greatest Natural History Museums, but it must not be allowed to turn nature into history!
