Community Support for the Resentencing and Homecoming of Jorge Colón
The Issue
For nearly 13 years, Jorge Colón has lived his life behind prison walls. During that time, life outside has continued to move forward. His daughter has grown up, his family has experienced losses and milestones, and the people who love him have continued hoping for the day he may finally have the opportunity to come home.
Jorge is more than the worst moment connected to his past. He is a father, a husband, a stepfather, a son, a brother, and a loved member of a family that has continued to stand beside him throughout his incarceration.
His daughter deserves the opportunity to experience her father outside of prison walls. His wife is committed to standing beside him as he rebuilds his life, and his stepson deserves the opportunity to have Jorge present in his life and family. His mother, siblings, and extended family have also remained an important source of love and support.
Over the years, Jorge has had time to grow, mature, reflect, and become a different man than the young man who entered prison nearly 13 years ago. He has a family and support system ready to help him transition home, maintain stability, continue his growth, and build a productive future.
We understand the seriousness of the circumstances that led to Jorge’s incarceration, and this petition is not intended to dismiss anyone’s pain or minimize the past. We are simply asking that the Court also consider the person Jorge is today, the years he has already served, his growth and rehabilitation, and the family that continues to need and love him.
Nearly 13 years is a significant portion of a person’s life. Jorge cannot change the years that have already passed, but he can continue choosing what he does with the years ahead.
By signing this petition, we respectfully ask that Jorge Colón be given meaningful consideration for resentencing and the opportunity for a second chance — a chance to be present as a father, husband, stepfather, son and brother, and to return home to the family that has never stopped waiting for him.
