Fortuna California is a city in Humboldt County CA (NorCal.) Two nights ago there was a board meeting discussing the return of students to the high school. Fortuna High has 900 students roughly. The board is not even considering online school for the children. Either in person, or ISP (which only 10% of a school is aloud to participate in, 25% requested ISP if the school reopened with in person learning.) So what will happen to this other 15%? The school has answered with EdGenuity. HOWEVER, this is without their teachers and there may be a cap on 100 students, which means the others will have to attend elsewhere. In a vote from the staff, 83% of them voted they felt unsafe returning to school. The board basically told them too bad. When the teachers tried to speak their concerns, they were rudely interrupted and the board would simply call on the next person. The teachers concerns were completely disregarded, as were some of the students. We have teachers and students who have auto immune problems. We're a pretty small community and are close to approaching 300 cases. We're disheartened that the board rather risk us, our community and the kids health, then simply do online education. The teachers have had all summer to work on their online educational systems. They weren't even given an opportunity to propose them. WE ARE NOW CLASSIFIED AS AN ORANGE ZONE, IT IS UNSAFE FOR US TO REOPEN!! Our healthcare is extremely limited and we do not have room in our hospitals for an outbreak!!
