I received a response from the Mayor’s office, but this conversation is far from over. Please continue sharing the petition, spreading the word, and reaching out to both the Mayor and your city councillor.
Let us be loud and unwavering in our message: we will not accept hate being given a platform in our city! Especially not on publicly funded land!
We will continue to stand up for dignity, safety, and respect for all members of our community.

Thank you for reaching out and sharing your concerns. I want to acknowledge the very real fear and hurt that many in our community are feeling right now—especially among 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals and all those who believe in building a city rooted in inclusion, respect, and safety for everyone.

Let me be unequivocal: I condemn hateful rhetoric and any event that seeks to divide our community or target marginalized groups. Such messages have no place in Saskatoon or anywhere in our society.

At the same time, we must recognize the legal complexities involved. The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms protects freedom of expression — even when that expression is deeply offensive or distressing to many. While these rights are not without limits, they do impose clear boundaries on how governments, including municipalities, can act in advance of events.

That said, the City has a responsibility to uphold its values. We have authority over the use of public spaces, and we must ensure our policies reflect our commitment to equity, reconciliation, and safety. Saskatoon has taken formal stands against discrimination and in support of inclusion—and these commitments are not merely symbolic. They guide how we govern and serve our community.

In light of this, I am bringing forward a Notice of Motion to the Governance and Priorities Committee this week to review and strengthen our public permitting process. This review will focus on aligning future decisions with both our legal obligations and the values that define Saskatoon.

I am also working closely with City Administration and the Saskatoon Police Service to monitor this event carefully, ensuring public safety is paramount and that the organizers are held accountable under the law.

Please know your voice matters. I will continue to speak out firmly against hate, defend the rights and dignity of all residents, and work tirelessly to ensure Saskatoon remains a city where everyone feels safe, respected, and valued.

Thank you for your commitment to our community.

Sincerely,

Mayor Cynthia Block
