Community-Led Affordable Housing Initiative for Portland

Community-Led Affordable Housing Initiative for Portland
The Issue
Community-Led Affordable Housing Initiative for Portland
We, the residents of Portland, Oregon, call on Governor Tina Kotek and the Portland City Council to endorse and support a community-led affordable housing initiative that will:
Allocate 2% of the city's general fund discretionary budget for participatory budgeting, allowing residents to directly vote on affordable housing projects.
Revise the Inclusionary Housing program to better serve low-income residents and families, particularly those earning less than 60% of the median income.
Develop eco-friendly, sustainable housing projects on available land outside the city limits to immediately house 8,000 people.
Prioritize the creation of affordable units with 2 or more bedrooms to accommodate families.
Ensure transparency in the use of funds collected through housing programs, directing them specifically to affordable housing initiatives.
Implement stricter oversight and realistic goals for affordable housing programs to address the needs of the most vulnerable populations.
This initiative aims to address Portland's housing emergency more effectively than current approaches, providing immediate relief while fostering long-term sustainability and community engagement.
We urge our leaders to take immediate action on this critical issue affecting thousands of Portland residents.
To implement this strategy:
Launch the petition on Change.org, targeting Portland residents and housing advocacy groups.
Reach out to local community organizations and activists to gather support and signatures.
Present the petition and its goals to Governor Kotek's office, requesting an endorsement and support.
Engage with Portland City Council members to discuss the initiative and gain their backing.
Organize community meetings to gather input and refine the proposal.
Collaborate with the Portland Housing Bureau to integrate this initiative with existing efforts.
Develop a detailed implementation plan, including timelines and budget allocations.
Create a public awareness campaign to educate residents about the benefits of participatory budgeting and community-led housing initiatives.
By combining community engagement, sustainable development, and targeted policy changes, this initiative aims to address Portland's affordable housing crisis more effectively and efficiently.
