Those who attended the Council meeting last night will recall that several members of the Council suggested that we should attend a meeting tomorrow night at the Moorestown Library (111 W. 2nd St.) presented by NJ State Assemblyman Troy Singleton from 6-9 pm. This meeting is called the " Citizen Advisory Board", and is not called for any one specific issue. The Council suggested we can attend the meeting with Singleton and raise this issue. Several members of the Council said that there is legislation currently pending in NJ that may address some of our concerns with the way the Council is handling the low income housing issues, particularly the "rules" that allow the Townships to essentially make important decisions involving millions of dollars and low income housing in secret, while blaming the litigation process for their inability to share any meaningful information with the taxpayers. The Council said the legislation is not being acted upon in the NJ legislature.
While I have serious doubts that pressing Mr. Singleton for action on this issue will make any difference in our situation, particularly as it appears that the Council has made up its mind already on the low income housing issue and is probably going to act on this in the next few months (unless we can stop it), I believe it is still a good idea for those who can to attend this meeting with Mr. Singleton to get the issue to his attention and make the point that there are serious concerns about the low income housing issue and the way it is being handled by the Council here in Moorestown.
I have previously emailed Mr. Singleton about this issue and I sent him the Petition a few weeks ago. To his credit, his staff reached out to me to set up a meeting to discuss our concerns. I am in the process of scheduling that meeting.
The Council suggested that if we make a strong impression on Mr. Singleton he may realize that this is something that needs to be addressed.
I hope that some of us can attend and raise our concerns with Mr. Singleton. I most likely cannot attend, but I am trying to clear my schedule.
If anyone can attend, I would ask the following: 1) is it true that the Council (not just here but I suspect in other towns in this area) are permitted to make decisions on important issues such as agreeing on low income housing and the location and costs that go along with it, which will ultimately cost millions of tax payers dollars and impact the school system as well as tax rates in complete secrecy and without public discussion? 2) what legislation exists or is being contemplated to change this process and make the entire process more transparent? 3) what is his position on these issues; 4) what can we do to get this issue out into the public and have discussion by the residents who will be directly impacted by the low income housing. Thanks
