Re: Community Appeal for Fairness, Due Process, and Recognition of Sheikh Hussain Makke’s Contribution to the British Shia Muslim Community

We write as concerned members of the British Shia Muslim community to respectfully ask that our voices and experiences are heard in relation to the recent public discussion surrounding Sheikh Hussain Makke.

Over many years, Sheikh Hussain Makke has been a deeply respected scholar, teacher, husband, father, and community figure who has touched the lives of countless individuals and families across the UK and beyond. For many of us, he is not simply a public figure; he is someone who has been part of our community’s journey — supporting families, guiding young people, comforting those experiencing hardship, and encouraging people to live with kindness, compassion, faith, and respect.

Through his teaching and community engagement, Sheikh Makke has consistently encouraged values that unite people: love for others, service to society, education, family responsibility, moral character, and peaceful coexistence. Many mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, sons, daughters, neighbours, and community members have personally benefited from his guidance, support, and words of encouragement.

We recognise the importance of protecting the safety of all members of society and we fully respect the role of the police, security services, and Government institutions. However, we also believe strongly in the fundamental British principles of fairness, evidence-based decision-making, and the presumption of innocence. Allegations and public concerns must be carefully assessed through proper legal processes, while ensuring that the voices of those who know an individual’s work and contribution are not overlooked.

We are deeply concerned that the positive impact Sheikh Makke has had on thousands of people has not been adequately represented in recent discussions. A balanced understanding requires listening not only to allegations but also to the experiences of the many people whose lives have been positively influenced by his years of religious education, pastoral support, and community service.

We respectfully urge the Home Secretary and relevant authorities to consider the testimonies of the communities he has served and to ensure that any decisions relating to Sheikh Hussain Makke are approached with fairness, impartiality, and due process.

The British values of justice, equality, freedom of belief, and respect for communities are strengthened when every person is treated fairly and when diverse voices are given the opportunity to be heard.

We ask that the experiences and concerns of the British Shia Muslim community are included in this important conversation, and that the positive contribution of Sheikh Hussain Makke as a scholar, educator, and community member is recognised.
