Clemency for Derek Paul Wright

The Issue

THIS PETITION IS ADDRESSED TO HIS EXCELLENCY THE GOVERNOR PRAYING THAT HE GRANT A COMMUTATION OF THE MANDATORY LIFE WITHOUT PAROLE SENTENCE OF DEREK PAUL WRIGHT FOR 1st DEGREE MURDER AND MAKE HIM ELIGIBLE FOR PAROLE CONSIDERATION. DEREK WRIGHT HAS BEEN INCARCERATED SINCE THE AGE OF 19 AND IS NOW 41 YEARS OLD. HE IS SIMPLY SEEKING AN OPPORTUNITY TO DEMONSTRATE THAT AFTER 22 YEARS OF INCARCERATION, HE IS A CHANGED MAN THAT HAS A LOT TO CONTRIBUTE TO SOCIETY.

Derek Wright has been incarcerated for 22 years and is serving a Life Without Parole. He is seeking a COMMUTATION from Your Excellency the Governor, which would merely make him eligible for parole CONSIDERATION.

Based on the latest Adolescent Brain Science, the average brain is not fully developed until after the age of 21. As a result, the US Supreme Court has already abolished mandatory Life Without Parole sentences for juveniles.

Derek Wright was 19 years old and based on the same exact science, it is impossible to determine that he possessed NO redemption qualities. Massachusetts has mandatory sentencing guidelines. The jury is not allowed to know how much time the defendant is facing.

The jury is not allowed to consider any mitigating circumstances such as maturity. Derek was in Special Education as a child and diagnosed with ADHD. He has been diagnosed with PTSD as a result of childhood trauma and Major Depressive Disorder.
